Video Game Sound Design
For this project I was given the task to design the sound for a video game, with the goal of creating at least 70% of the sounds myself using Foley recording and synthesis and using a maximum of 30% of the sounds from libraries. After having a shot of the game and running through the level, I assessed which sounds I needed and how I would capture them.
I have included this project as it demonstrates my skills as a sound designer and audio post production engineer. I created most of the sounds myself keeping well within the 70/30 split, only using the explosion sound, gunfire, water ambience and wildlife sounds (crickets, frogs, hawks). All Foley including the footsteps mentioned, voices, clothing and sounds such as the lever opening were recorded by myself.
Other sounds I recorded include the fire torches on the walls which was a combination of different paper wrappers being crunched up and a synthesised low end, the wind ambience which was recorded outside my house late at night to avoid car sounds and birds sounds and the canvas tents rustling which was a towel fluttering.
This project also demonstrates my skills integrating the recorded audio into a gaming engine, using Unreal Engine’s Editor to import the audio and place each element into the game, using some basic interface programming.
The score for the game was also composed, recorded and mixed by myself using Ableton Live.
