For this project I decided to enter a remix contest, I wanted to create a porfolio of remixes and felt that since I was intending on creating remixes that it would be a good idea to try a contest. This meant that I could potentailly win a prize and could recieve feedback from this finished remix. It also provided th opportunity for my remix to be heard by an established musician and record label.

I created an account with SKIO Music and enter their featured remix contest for Flight Facilities – Crave You.

This site requires a paid subscription to enter the contests, but also offer a 14 day trial that provides you with the vocal stems and the option to enter 1 contest during the trial period. This was enough for me as I only required the vocal stem (didn’t need extra instrument stems) and would be able to have the remix complete within the 14 days, or I could create another account to submit the remix.

I decided to create a trancy, Ibiza/Balearic House style house remix, with a bit of chicago style drums (808 rhythmic rimshots). I created a drum/rhythm track first, at 125 BPM and used Serato Sample to start programming in the vocal stems and structure the track before adding melodic elements.

Serato Sample also clarified for me that the track was in C#min and I would work in this key, ensuring that all the meoldic elements were in this key.. I could use the ‘scale’ midi effect in Ableton to keep all the instruments to this scale. I created a bassline first that worked with the track and then layered lead melodic synths over this.

Once I finished composing the remix, I mixed this then exported the mixdown into a Pro Tools session for mastering.
